This site represents an exploration of ideas and schemes worked through over the past 20 years or so. Some projects fulfilled, others not; many still in progress.
Born at night on the front seat of an Austin A35 van in the wilderness of the Hampshire countryside, I now live and work in Sussex and have done for many years.
The practical work I create responds to the small worlds which we all inhabit, but, draws on the inspiration of art, music, literature, people and place. Influences include the writing of Daisetz Suzuki and Haruki Murakami, the films of Yasujiro Ozu, the photographs of Josef Koudelka and Josef Sudek, the painting of Francis Bacon and the sound worlds of Leos Janacek.
Most recently my thoughts have gravitated to exploring 'new' approaches in response to our digital age; designing and building pinhole cameras that use sheet film in various sizes. The slow process of stand developing negatives and hand making salt prints forces me to work at a different pace and give the subject its own time to communicate.
